Project Overview:
BLOC Contractors replaced a failed Armco pipe near Midmar dam as part of ongoing upgrades to the N3. The site posed a number of challenges due to wet conditions and the need to maintain stability during installation. Pipe jacking was selected as the preferred method to install the new pipe without disrupting the surface above.
Project Details:
The collapsed Armco pipe had compromised the integrity of the road above, requiring urgent replacement. Our team utilised pipe jacking to install a new concrete pipe through the embankment with minimal surface disturbance. The project took place during the wettest time of year, and the site was heavily waterlogged.
To manage the conditions, the team had to pump water out of the working area continuously while maintaining safety and accuracy throughout the installation process.

Challenges:
- High groundwater levels and persistent water ingress
- Maintaining progress and precision under wet site conditions
- Completing the job safely and efficiently before the end-of-year shutdown
Outcome: The project was completed on time and to specification, despite difficult conditions. The new pipe provides a long-term solution to the drainage problem, and the road is now structurally secure.
