Project Overview:
A collapsed Armco pipe along Karkloof Road had caused a section of the roadway to gradually give way, creating a growing risk to vehicles and infrastructure. BLOC Contractors was appointed to carry out a pipe jacking operation to replace the failed pipe and stabilise the affected section.
Project Details:
The existing Armco pipe had deteriorated to the point of complete failure, leaving little support for the road above. Using a trenchless pipe jacking method, BLOC installed a new concrete pipe without disturbing the road surface, which allowed for continued road functionality during the process.
The wet season posed a major challenge, with a constant flow of water making excavation and installation more complex. Careful water management and site safety were prioritised throughout the project.

Challenges:
- Constant water ingress into the work area
- Working with limited structural stability due to total Armco failure
- Maintaining safety during excavation in wet conditions
Outcome: The pipe jack was successfully completed under difficult conditions. With the new pipe now in place, road repair work can proceed to restore full functionality to the route. The installation ensures long-term drainage and stability for this key connection near Howick.
